Happy Birthday to Sting: Beacon Theatre New York October 1, 2011

Happy Birthday Sting Beacon Theatre October 1, 2011The steady rainfall could not dampen the spirits of anyone attending Sting’s 60th birthday concert at the Beacon Theatre in New York on October 1, 2011. The celebrity-packed celebration carried on oblivious to the weather, and the majestic Beacon was crammed with eager concert-goers by 7 p.m., all partaking in free drinks for the evening. It was difficult to move around and locate acquaintances in the swelling crowd and navigating to my front row, center seat in the balcony was challenging. It was worth the effort, however, for the distant but perfect view of all the action eagerly anticipated onstage.

The view from the balcony

The show kicked off around 8:30 with Robert Downey Jr. presiding as host for the evening and introducing Sting after a short monologue. Sting then proceeded to introduce one musical guest after another with a personal story explaining their history. In return, each of these musicians paid tribute to Sting on his 60th birthday by performing one or more of his songs, with Sting performing on his own at times as well. The setlist for the concert follows along with the artists contributing for each song.

These were all unique versions altered by each singer’s personal style and musical interpretation. I particularly enjoyed “Consider Me Gone” with Herbie Hancock and Branford Marsalis; I’m not certain I’ve ever heard that one performed live before. Sting’s duet with son Joe Sumner on “Why Should I Cry for You” was another touching favorite for me since Sting wrote the song about his own father.

The absolute highlight of the night was definitely saved for last when Bruce Springsteen took over the stage to perform. He first gave a hilarious account of his friendship with Sting and thoughts on him turning 60, then mesmerized the crowd with his stunning rendition of “I Hung My Head”; the song was perfectly suited for him and has never sounded better. Bruce followed next with “Fields of Gold,” declaring it one of his favorite Sting songs. Sting then joined Bruce and together they rocked “Can’t Stand Losing You.” Without a doubt, this was the pinnacle of the whole evening, and I will always treasure the memory of seeing these two legends performing side by side onstage.

Sting and Bruce Springsteen "Can't Stand Losing You"

The birthday celebration ended appropriately with a surprise present from wife Trudie Styler – Scottish bagpipers and drummers marching down the aisles and joining Sting onstage for the intro to “I Was Brought To My Senses.” Then everyone, performers and audience, joined in singing “Happy Birthday” to Sting as flower petal confetti showered the stage and floor near midnight.

For those keeping track, the show was three and a half hours with one intermission, 27 songs, and a boatload of guest entertainers. I feel privileged indeed to have experienced such an extraordinary concert in celebration of Sting’s 60th birthday and 25 years as a solo artist along with so many other enthusiastic Sting fans. Although it was Sting’s birthday, I am left with a treasured gift to remember always. Happy 60th birthday to Sting!

Sting 60th Birthday Concert Beacon Theatre NYC October 1, 2011

The speculation and rumors are over after it was officially announced yesterday that Sting will perform a concert on the eve of his 60th birthday at the Beacon Theatre in NYC on October 1, 2011. All proceeds will benefit the Robin Hood Foundation, and a slew of entertainers are lined up to perform Sting songs in tribute to his 25-year solo music career. Take a look at the guest list:

Bruce Springsteen
Lady Gaga
Stevie Wonder
Mary J. Blige
Herbie Hancock
Robert Downey Jr.
Vince Gill
Will.i.am
Rufus Wainwright
Branford Marsalis
Billy Joel
Chris Botti

Wow! This is going to be quite an event for those who can afford the price of a golden ticket. Although the concert is technically “private” and not open to the public, some tickets will be made available for purchase by Sting Fan Club members today starting at $279.10. Ticketmaster also lists tickets for $2,583.90, must be for those who REALLY want to donate to the Robin Hood Foundation as well as get a primo seat. First and foremost, this will be a celebration for Sting’s family and friends in an intimate setting (Beacon Theatre seats roughly 3,000 people), but how nice that Sting fans are on the guest list too and a worthy charity will benefit as well. Sounds like a birthday party befitting the Englishman in New York!

Sting Beyond Symphonicity: End of the Tour

The Symphonicity Tour wraps up in Brescia, Italy today, leaving Sting fans wondering just what the future holds for the musician. Sting definitely has a few things lined up, but nothing currently to suggest songwriting or work in progress for a new studio album, long awaited since his release of Sacred Love so many years ago in 2003. Could the Symphonicity Tour be once again extended to come back through North America? Will Sting begin work on an album of new material? Both are possible, but it looks like we’ll just have to wait and keep our fingers crossed. In the meantime the light bulb still burns bright as Sting is hardly the type to rest on his laurels, and he definitely has some other noteworthy projects coming up in the near future.

September 27, 2011: Sting: 25 Years, the definitive box set collection
A must-have greatest hits release for addition to a Sting fan’s collection with three CDs featuring 45 remastered tracks spanning Sting’s solo career plus a DVD containing previously unreleased live concert footage, also accompanied by a comprehensive book featuring intimate photos, complete lyrics and a written introduction by Sting.

October 2, 2011: Sting’s 60th Birthday Celebration in NYC?
Unconfirmed but published information from a foreign article suggest an event is in the works for Sting’s 60th birthday on October 2, 2011 for a concert at the Beacon Theatre with many entertainers invited to come and sing Sting songs along with the birthday boy, including Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Will.I.Am, Mary J. Blige, Lady Gaga, and Billy Joel. We will just have to wait and see if this one is true.

October 5, 2011: Oracle OpenWorld
Sting is the announced entertainment at this information technology business conference in San Francisco along with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Sting Broadway Musical
Sting has been working on an adaptation of his 1991 album The Soul Cages for the theater for some time now, and it is reported to be an autobiographical work that might just include new music and reference Sting’s memoir Broken Music as well. No telling if and when this project will be completed, but definitely worth contemplating a trip to NYC for all Sting fans!

So, are you interested in any of the above mentioned projects or appearances? Or are you perhaps waiting for something else from Sting? Let me know your thoughts!

Symphonicity II: Sting Tour 2011 Setlist Songs Band

Symphonicity II is back in action and well under way as Sting’s Symphonicity Tour began its second sweep across Europe in Bucharest, Romania on June 6, 2011, building upon its previous success and stellar reception from the first leg of orchestral performances starting in June of 2010. There appear to be no great surprises or changes to the concert in this second reincarnation; no different songs have been added to the setlist, Sting’s personal band remains the same, and the format of the show still stands at approximately two hours in length with a short intermission and no opening act. There are a few minor revisions worth noting with the departure of percussionist David Cossin as well as the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, replaced by various local European orchestras willing to fill in and lend a musical hand instead. Following are further Sting Symphonicity Tour 2011 details for those who are interested.

Contest Giveaway for Free Autographed Sting All This Time DVD

Here is your chance to win a free copy of the Sting . . . All This Time DVD autographed twice by Sting himself courtesy of Message in a Bloggle at Stingfield.com. If you are a Sting fan and have never seen this concert DVD before, you need to immediately go rent it or just buy it (if you don’t win it here first)! It is spectacular for several reasons. First because it was a private performance at Sting’s gorgeous Tuscan villa, and second because it took place on the day of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This DVD provides behind-the-scenes footage of Sting’s hesitation to perform based on the devastating circumstances of the day as well as all of the musicians’ reactions to the unfolding drama of the terrorist attacks. The decision to go on with the show and the resulting performance is nothing short of emotional and beautifully haunting, making this one of my favorite Sting concert DVD performances.

Following are the specifics on the giveaway contest. Good luck to all you Sting fans out there!

Sting Performs Another Corporate Conference: Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco October 2011

Announced the same day as his corporate gig in Orlando on May 18, Sting was revealed to be a performer at the Oracle OpenWorld business conference in San Francisco on October 5, 2011. This performance follows several months after his summer Symphonicity Tour ends and likely will be similar in scope to his recent performance in Orlando. Merely sign up for this technology conference to see Sting at Oracle OpenWorld 2011!

The question that remains is whether additional Sting performances will be announced in that window of time between the end of the Symphonicity Tour on July 31 and the Oracle performance on October 5? Stay tuned Sting fans!

Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot: Matthew Morrison Covers Sting

Here is Matthew Morrison of Glee singing “Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot” with Sting. Personally I think this offers nothing new over the original; it is average, predictable and brings me no glee. But I may not be the best judge since this isn’t one of my favorite songs to begin with. What do you think, Sting fans?
