Check Out The B52s Funplex!

I adore the B52s music. It was a big part of my high school days and immediately conjures images of fun and dancing for me. I screamed the lyrics to QUICHE LORRAINE while driving DIRTY BACK ROADS in my own PRIVATE IDAHO like there was a DEVIL IN MY CAR, if you know what I mean. But shortly after “Cosmic Thing” (1989) I lost interest as a grew up, although I did see the B52s perform live at the Illinois State Fair, sometime around 1992-1993. It was a great, fun concert for me. I did get “Nude on the Moon – the B52s Anthology” (1998) because, well, I just had to have it!

So then I heard the B52s would release their first new album in 16 years, and I was instantly happy. I must get this CD when it comes out, I thought to myself. But I played the CD for the first time with anticipation and a little concern. Would this new CD destroy the reputation of this band I adore? There was no need to fear, as it turns out. I was immediately reminded why I love the B-52s so much. Pump, the opening track, will do just that – pump you up. You’re hips can’t help but start shaking and before you know it, you’re dancing like in the 80’s all over again. I’m fond of Juliet of the Spirits too. I like Kate and Cindy’s voices together on that song and the ethereal, higher tech tone of the music. The whole thing is a party, a party celebrating the B52s new music with their old acquaintance!

While Funplex is familiar, I do think it shows some growth and technological advances with their music. If you liked the B52s, you will love this new CD for the same old reasons but hopefully also find something new to add to your adoration of this group! The front of the CD and the website describe Funplex as “Loud sexy rock and roll with the beat turned up to hot pink!” Well okay, that works for me! Now I just need to work on teasing and spraying my hair to stand straight up while I listen and dance to Funplex! Check out the video for Funplex here!
